Downlight Installation Services

Whether you’re installing downlights for the first time, converting halogens to LED, or replacing faulty or outdated fittings, Saunders Electrical Group carries out downlight installations across the Hills District and Hawkesbury to a high standard — clean, efficient, and properly wired.

New Downlight Installation

Installing downlights in a room that doesn’t currently have them requires running new cabling from a nearby circuit, cutting correctly sized holes in the ceiling, mounting the downlight frames, connecting the wiring, and fitting the globes or LED modules. All new installations are issued with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW). From $60 + GST per light, depending on ceiling type, access, and number of lights.

Halogen to LED Conversion

Halogen downlights are still common in older Hills District homes — particularly those built in the 1990s and 2000s. Replacing halogens with LED downlights is one of the highest-return upgrades a homeowner can make. LED downlights use up to 75% less electricity than equivalent halogens, run significantly cooler (reducing ceiling fire risk), last 25,000-50,000 hours vs 2,000 hours for halogen, and produce better quality light with more consistent colour temperature. We convert halogen downlight systems to LED across Hills District and Hawkesbury homes efficiently, often completing a full room in a single visit.

Downlight Replacement and Repair

Flickering downlights, dead globes, faulty transformers, and fittings that don’t sit flush with the ceiling are all common issues we fix. If individual downlights are failing repeatedly, the issue is often with the transformer or the wiring connection rather than the globe itself — we diagnose the root cause rather than just swapping globes.

Bathroom and Wet Area Downlights

Bathrooms require IP-rated downlights appropriate for the zone they’re installed in — the electrical standards for wet areas are more specific than general living spaces. We specify and install the correct fittings for every bathroom zone to ensure compliance with AS/NZS 3000:2018.

Dimmer Installation

If you’re adding dimmers to your downlight circuit, the dimmer must be compatible with the LED globes installed. Incompatible dimmers cause flickering, buzzing, and premature globe failure. We specify compatible dimmers as part of every dimmer installation and test the full circuit before completing the job.

Downlights on Pergolas and Insulated Patio Roofs

Downlights installed under a pergola or patio roof need the same care given to any outdoor electrical fitting, and if the roof is insulated panel construction, the cable run through the roof cavity needs to be correctly rated for that environment. Standard cable isn’t suitable inside an insulated panel long-term. See our guide to wiring insulated pergola and patio roofs for the detail on why this matters and how we handle it.

Do I Need a Licensed Electrician to Install Downlights in NSW?

Yes — downlight installation is prescribed electrical work in NSW and must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor. The work involves connecting to your home’s electrical circuits, running cable through ceiling cavities, and making connections inside the ceiling space. Under NSW Fair Trading regulations, all of this must be performed by a holder of a current NSW Electrical Contractor Licence. A Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) must be issued on completion.

Attempting to self-install downlights — or having an unlicensed person do it — is illegal in NSW, voids your home insurance, and creates a fire and electric shock risk. Downlights that are incorrectly wired or installed without appropriate insulation clearance are a leading cause of ceiling fires in Australian homes.

Saunders Electrical Group holds NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 344815C. We issue a CCEW on every downlight installation.

Why Switch from Halogen to LED Downlights?

Many Hills District homes still have halogen downlights. Here’s why upgrading to LED is worth doing now rather than later:

Energy savings. LED downlights use 7-10 watts versus 50 watts for an equivalent halogen. A home with 20 halogen downlights running 4 hours per day saves approximately $300-$400 per year in electricity at current Hills District energy rates — the upgrade pays for itself within 1-2 years.

Reduced fire risk. Halogen downlights run extremely hot — up to 300°C at the lamp surface. Direct contact with ceiling insulation is a well-documented fire risk. LED downlights run at a fraction of the temperature and do not pose the same insulation clearance risk.

Longer lifespan. Quality LED downlights last 25,000-50,000 hours. At 4 hours per day, that’s 17-34 years. Halogen globes last 2,000 hours — approximately 18 months at the same usage. The labour cost of replacing halogens repeatedly adds up significantly over time.

Better light quality. Modern LED downlights offer consistent colour temperature (warm white, neutral, or cool white), higher colour rendering index (CRI), and better light distribution than equivalent halogens. The visual result in a room is noticeably better.

Insulation compatibility. IC-rated (Insulation Contact) LED downlights can be safely installed in ceiling spaces with insulation directly above — something halogen downlights cannot safely accommodate.

Bathroom and wet area downlights start from $75 + GST per light. Dimmer installation starts from $120 + GST per dimmer. All prices exclude GST. Do I need a licensed electrician to install downlights in NSW?

Yes. Downlight installation is prescribed electrical work in NSW and must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor. The work involves connecting to home electrical circuits and running cable through ceiling cavities. Saunders Electrical Group holds NSW Electrical Contractor Licence 344815C and issues a CCEW on every installation. Unlicensed downlight installation is illegal, voids home insurance, and is a fire risk.

How long does downlight installation take?

A halogen-to-LED conversion in a single room typically takes 1-2 hours depending on the number of lights. New downlight installation requiring new wiring takes 2-4 hours for a typical room. Whole-home installations are usually completed in a single day visit.

Can I supply my own downlights and have Saunders Electrical Group install them?

Yes. You can supply your own downlights and we will install them. Before purchasing, confirm the fittings are suitable for your ceiling type (plasterboard, timber, concrete), ceiling thickness, and whether your ceiling has insulation above it — insulated ceilings require IC-rated (Insulation Contact) downlights. Call us before purchasing if you’re unsure.

What is an IC-rated downlight and do I need one?

IC-rated (Insulation Contact) downlights are specifically designed for installation in ceilings with insulation directly above them. Non-IC-rated downlights must have a 200mm clearance from insulation — if insulation is pushed against a non-IC fitting, it creates a fire risk. Most Hills District homes built after the 1990s have ceiling insulation. We assess insulation status as part of every downlight installation quote and specify the correct fitting type.

Why are my downlights flickering after switching to LED?

LED flickering after conversion from halogen is almost always caused by dimmer incompatibility. The dimmer switches designed for halogen globes are not compatible with LED globes and cause flickering, buzzing, and premature LED failure. The fix is to replace the dimmer with an LED-compatible trailing edge dimmer. We diagnose and fix LED flickering issues across Hills District and Hawkesbury homes.
