Ceiling Fan Installation – Hills District & Hawkesbury

A well-placed ceiling fan makes a genuine difference to how a home feels — and in the Hills District and Hawkesbury, where summers are long and hot, most homes benefit from them in every main living area and bedroom. Whether you’re replacing an old fan, installing new fans throughout the house, or adding a fan with a light kit to replace an existing light point, Saunders Electrical Group handles the full installation.

We install ceiling fans across Castle Hill, Kenthurst, Baulkham Hills, Kellyville, Windsor, Richmond, Rouse Hill, and all surrounding suburbs. We can supply the fan for you or install one you’ve already purchased — whichever works best for you.

Do You Need a Licensed Electrician to Install a Ceiling Fan in NSW?

Yes. In NSW, ceiling fan installation is classified as electrical work and must be carried out by a licensed electrician. This applies whether you’re replacing an existing fan, installing onto an existing light point, or running new wiring for a fan in a location that doesn’t currently have one.

A licensed installation also ensures the fan is correctly earthed, the wiring is safe, and the mounting is structurally sound for the weight and movement of the fan. Improperly installed fans are a safety risk — both from an electrical standpoint and from the physical load on the ceiling mount.

How Much Does Ceiling Fan Installation Cost?

Ceiling fan installation with Saunders Electrical Group ranges from $160 to $350 + GST per fan, depending on:

  • Replacing an existing ceiling fan or light point — this is the most straightforward installation and sits at the lower end of the range. The wiring is already in place and the job is typically completed quickly.
  • New wiring required — if the fan is going in a location that doesn’t have an existing point, new wiring needs to be run from the switchboard or a nearby circuit. This takes longer and sits toward the upper end.
  • Fan with a light kit — fans with integrated light kits take slightly longer to install than fans without, but the price difference is minor.
  • Ceiling height and access — high ceilings or difficult roof access can add time to the job.

Installing multiple fans in a single visit is the most cost-effective approach — the travel and setup time is shared across all fans. If you’re fitting out multiple rooms, book them together.

Every job gets a free, no-obligation quote with a fixed price before any work begins.

Supply and Install, or Install Only

We offer two options:

Supply and install — we source and supply the fan and handle the full installation. This is the easiest option if you want a quality fan without the hassle of researching and purchasing one yourself. We’ll recommend fans suited to the room size, ceiling height, and your preferences.

Install only — if you’ve already purchased a fan, we install it. Bring the box on the day and we’ll handle the rest. Just make sure the fan is rated for your ceiling height and the room size — if you’re unsure, ask us when you book and we’ll confirm it’s suitable.

What’s Involved in a Ceiling Fan Installation

A standard ceiling fan installation with SEG looks like this:

  • Assessment of the existing point or proposed location — we confirm the ceiling structure can support the fan and identify the best wiring approach
  • Removal of the existing fitting — if replacing a fan or light, we remove the old fitting safely
  • Installation of the mounting bracket and downrod — correctly rated for the weight of the fan
  • Wiring and connection — all connections made to Australian wiring standards
  • Fan balancing and test — we test the fan on all speeds and check for vibration or noise before we leave
  • Full site clean-up — packaging removed, work area left clean

If a remote control, wall controller, or timer is included with your fan, we’ll install and configure that as part of the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install a ceiling fan myself in NSW?

No. Ceiling fan installation is classified as electrical work in NSW and must be carried out by a licensed electrician. This includes replacing an existing fan, installing onto an existing light point, and any installation requiring new wiring.

How long does a ceiling fan installation take?

A straightforward replacement of an existing fan or light point typically takes 30 to 60 minutes per fan. New wiring installations take longer depending on the cable run required. If you’re having multiple fans installed in one visit, we’ll give you a total time estimate when we quote.

Can a ceiling fan replace an existing light fitting?

Yes — and this is one of the most common installations we carry out. A fan with an integrated light kit replaces your existing light point, giving you both a fan and a light from the same location. We handle the full swap including removal of the old fitting.

What size ceiling fan do I need for my room?

As a general guide: rooms up to 15m² suit a fan with a blade span of around 900–1200mm. Rooms between 15–30m² suit 1200–1400mm. Larger open-plan areas may need a 1400mm+ fan or multiple fans. Ceiling height also matters — rooms with lower ceilings need a fan with a shorter downrod or a flush-mount design. If you’re unsure, ask us when you book.

Do ceiling fans work in winter?

Yes — most ceiling fans have a reverse function that pushes warm air that has risen to the ceiling back down into the room. Running the fan on low speed in reverse during winter can meaningfully reduce heating costs. It’s worth using.

Can you install a ceiling fan on a raked or high ceiling?

Yes. Raked ceilings require an angled mounting bracket and the correct downrod length to ensure the fan hangs level. High ceilings need a longer downrod to bring the fan to the optimal height for airflow — generally 2.1 to 2.4 metres from floor to blade. We assess this during the quote and ensure the right hardware is used.

How many ceiling fans do I need for my home?

As a starting point, most Hills District and Hawkesbury homes benefit from a fan in each bedroom and the main living area. Larger open-plan kitchens and dining areas may need two. Outdoor entertaining areas with covered pergolas are also well suited to outdoor-rated fans. We can walk through your home and make specific recommendations when we quote.
