Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install a ceiling fan myself in NSW?
No. Ceiling fan installation is classified as electrical work in NSW and must be carried out by a licensed electrician. This includes replacing an existing fan, installing onto an existing light point, and any installation requiring new wiring.
How long does a ceiling fan installation take?
A straightforward replacement of an existing fan or light point typically takes 30 to 60 minutes per fan. New wiring installations take longer depending on the cable run required. If you’re having multiple fans installed in one visit, we’ll give you a total time estimate when we quote.
Can a ceiling fan replace an existing light fitting?
Yes — and this is one of the most common installations we carry out. A fan with an integrated light kit replaces your existing light point, giving you both a fan and a light from the same location. We handle the full swap including removal of the old fitting.
What size ceiling fan do I need for my room?
As a general guide: rooms up to 15m² suit a fan with a blade span of around 900–1200mm. Rooms between 15–30m² suit 1200–1400mm. Larger open-plan areas may need a 1400mm+ fan or multiple fans. Ceiling height also matters — rooms with lower ceilings need a fan with a shorter downrod or a flush-mount design. If you’re unsure, ask us when you book.
Do ceiling fans work in winter?
Yes — most ceiling fans have a reverse function that pushes warm air that has risen to the ceiling back down into the room. Running the fan on low speed in reverse during winter can meaningfully reduce heating costs. It’s worth using.
Can you install a ceiling fan on a raked or high ceiling?
Yes. Raked ceilings require an angled mounting bracket and the correct downrod length to ensure the fan hangs level. High ceilings need a longer downrod to bring the fan to the optimal height for airflow — generally 2.1 to 2.4 metres from floor to blade. We assess this during the quote and ensure the right hardware is used.
How many ceiling fans do I need for my home?
As a starting point, most Hills District and Hawkesbury homes benefit from a fan in each bedroom and the main living area. Larger open-plan kitchens and dining areas may need two. Outdoor entertaining areas with covered pergolas are also well suited to outdoor-rated fans. We can walk through your home and make specific recommendations when we quote.
