If you’re arranging a parent’s bathroom for ageing in place — or future-proofing your own — the checklist usually stops at grab bars, a shower seat, and non-slip tiles. It should also include the lighting layout, and almost never does.

Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death for Australians aged 65 and over, and most of those falls happen in the bathroom — a room built around a hard, wet, low-friction floor next to a water source. The electrical layer almost never gets a mention in renovation advice, despite the wiring rules already dictating exactly where lighting, switches, and power can and can’t go in a wet area — rules most homeowners have never seen.

What the Standard Already Regulates — and Why It Matters for Falls

AS/NZS 3000:2018 divides a bathroom into zones radiating out from the water source, and each zone carries different equipment rules:

  • Zone 0 (inside the bath or shower recess) — almost no electrical equipment permitted
  • Zone 1 (the splash zone directly around the bath/shower) — IP-rated equipment only
  • Zone 2 (0.6 m beyond Zone 1) — restricted equipment, shaver sockets only for power
  • Zone 3 (everywhere else in the room) — standard equipment, still RCD-protected

Two rules inside this framework are the ones most relevant to fall prevention, and most overlooked by anyone outside the trade:

  1. No switch or GPO within 0.3 m of the floor in a bathroom (Clauses 6.2.4.2 and 6.2.4.3) — which is precisely the height range a falling person’s hand or head passes through.
  2. IP44 is the standard for bathroom ceiling downlights — a rating most existing bathroom lighting doesn’t meet, which is part of why bathroom lighting is so often too dim or too harshly concentrated in one spot, leaving the rest of the room in shadow at exactly the moment someone is stepping out of a shower onto a wet floor.

Every final subcircuit in the bathroom also requires 30 mA RCD protection at the switchboard (Clause 2.6.3.2.2) — the same protection that stops electrocution also has to be engineered around, correctly, when adding any of the fall-prevention features below.

The Fall-Prevention Features That Are Actually Electrical Work

Most “ageing in place” bathroom advice stops at grab bars and shower seats — genuinely useful, but not electrical, and not where SEG adds value. The features below are:

  • Motion-sensor path lighting — a low-level sensor light that activates before someone steps into a dark bathroom at 2am, rather than requiring a fumble for a switch in the dark (which is itself a fall trigger)
  • Illuminated grab bars — grab bars with an integrated LED strip, wired on a dedicated, zone-compliant circuit — these need to be specified and installed by a licensed electrician, not bought off the shelf and DIY-wired, because the wiring has to clear Zone 0/1 restrictions
  • Humidity-sensing exhaust fans — condensation and residual steam on tile is a slip risk long after someone’s finished showering; a humidity sensor keeps the fan running until the room is actually dry, not just for a fixed timer duration
  • Heated towel rails on a dedicated circuit — reduces the “cold floor, rushed movement” pattern that shows up repeatedly in fall data, without the homeowner needing to touch a switch with wet hands

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install a light switch inside my shower recess?
No. AS/NZS 3000:2018 prohibits switches in Zone 0 entirely, and any switch in Zone 1 or Zone 2 must be IP-rated to at least IPX4. A standard household switch cannot legally be installed in either zone.

Why do bathroom downlights need a different rating to the rest of the house?
Bathroom ceiling downlights need an IP44 rating due to moisture and steam exposure. Standard downlights rated for dry areas are not compliant for bathroom installation and can be a fire or shock risk over time as moisture ingress affects the fitting.

Is a motion-sensor light in a bathroom a compliance requirement or just a nice-to-have?
It’s not mandated by the wiring rules, but it addresses a real, well-documented fall trigger — navigating a dark bathroom — that the standard’s zone rules don’t solve on their own. It’s a safety upgrade layered on top of compliance, not a substitute for it.

Does adding a heated towel rail or illuminated grab bar require an electrician, or can it be self-installed?
It requires a licensed electrician. Any new circuit in a bathroom must have RCD protection at the switchboard and comply with the relevant zone restrictions for that fitting’s location — getting this wrong risks both non-compliance and a genuine shock hazard in a wet area.
