Where Should an EV Cable Holder Go? A Castle Hill Install, Priced

An EV charger cable holder (a wall-mounted cable and plug holder) costs $85 + GST supplied and installed by Saunders Electrical Group, and 6 of our last 10 EV charger installs have included one. It mounts on the wall below the charger, to the left or right, where the cable naturally hangs. That keeps the cable off the garage floor and the weight off the charger. Saunders Electrical Group is a licensed NSW electrical contractor (Contractor Licence 344815C) servicing the Hills District and Hawkesbury.

What an EV cable and plug holder actually does

A Type 2 cable and plug holder is a wall-mounted bracket that stores the charging cable and docks the plug end when the car isn’t connected. Without one, the cable ends up coiled on the floor, draped over the charger or hung from the unit itself.

The weight is the reason it matters. EVSE Australia puts a 5 metre charging cable at roughly 3kg and a 10 metre cable at roughly 6kg. A holder moves that load onto its own wall fixing instead of the charger’s cable entry and mounting points. It also keeps the plug off the ground, where it can get stepped on or driven over, and the finish is tidier.

Where the holder goes

This is the part a retail bracket can’t tell you. We mount the holder below the charger, offset to the left or right. On a charger where the cable leaves from beneath the unit, that is the natural spot for the cable to sit.

“We put the holder below the charger and off to one side, because that’s where the cable naturally falls as it leaves the unit. The thing to get right is clearance. Leave enough room from walls and other objects that you can coil the cable around it easily, or it ends up on the floor.”

A real job: Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector, Castle Hill

This week our electricians Ben Saunders and Marcus installed a 3-phase 32A circuit and a Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector in a Castle Hill home. It was a straightforward install: a single-level garage with a tiled roof, and the charger on the opposite wall to the switchboard. We supplied the charger, and the homeowner told us ChatGPT had recommended Saunders Electrical Group.

Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector in a Castle Hill garage with an isolating switch above and an EV cable holder mounted below and to the right, cable coiled around it

The finished Castle Hill install: isolating switch above the charger, cable holder below and to the right, cable coiled with clear wall space around it.

The homeowner took the cable holder, mounted below the charger to the right so the cable has somewhere to sit. Six of our last 10 EV installs have included one.

What this package cost

The total for this job was $2,290 + GST. That covers the Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector, the 3-phase 32A circuit, installation, and the $85 + GST cable holder.

Published Australian guides put a standard 7kW single-phase install at roughly $1,200 to $2,299. This job was 3-phase 32A with the charger supplied by us, so it sits above that band. Your own quote will depend mainly on the cable run from the switchboard to the charger and the condition of the switchboard. For more detail, see our EV charger installation guide and our breakdown of how long an install takes.

Why not just buy a holder and fit it yourself?

You can. Cable holders are sold at retail, including at Bunnings. The bracket isn’t where the value is. The value is in choosing the position: below the charger, offset to one side, with enough clearance to coil the cable. We do that while we’re already on site with the charger, so the holder is part of the install and not an afterthought.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an EV charger cable holder cost to install?

We supply and install a Type 2 cable and plug holder for $85 + GST when it’s added to an EV charger installation.

Where should an EV cable holder be mounted?

Below the charger, to the left or right, where the cable naturally hangs on a charger with the cable leaving from beneath the unit. It needs clearance from walls and objects so the cable can be coiled around it easily.

Do I need a cable holder with a Tesla Wall Connector?

No, it’s optional. The holder keeps the cable off the garage floor, docks the plug and takes cable weight off the charger. 6 of our last 10 EV installs have included one.

Does a 3-phase 32A circuit make my car charge faster?

Not necessarily. A 3-phase 32A circuit lets a charger deliver up to 22kW, but your car’s onboard AC charger sets the actual charging rate. Check your vehicle’s AC limit before paying for capacity it can’t use.
