For homeowners in the Hills and Hawkesbury, that means one thing in practical terms — the question is no longer if you’ll need an EV charger installed, it’s when, and whether the person installing it actually knows the rules.

The Part Nobody’s Telling You: EV Chargers Aren’t a Standard Power Point

This is the gap we see constantly on-site, and it’s worth being blunt about: a compliant EV charger installation is governed by Appendix P of AS/NZS 3000:2018, and it is not the same job as running power to a garage.

The requirements that actually matter:

  • A dedicated circuit for every EV connecting point — no sharing with existing circuits, no matter how “quiet” the load looks on paper.
  • RCD protection matched to the connector, not just the switchboard. A standard Type A RCD (30 mA) is the minimum, but if the charger uses an IEC 62196 connector — which most Type 2/CCS home units do — the standard requires a Type B RCD, or a Type A plus a separate DC fault detection device rated above 6 mA DC. Get this wrong and the safety switch may simply fail to detect a DC fault at all.
  • Cable sizing that matches real charging speed, not the existing circuit in the wall — a 7 kW single-phase charger needs 6 mm² TPS at minimum, and an 11 kW three-phase install needs 6 mm² three-phase cable rated at 20 A per phase.
  • Outdoor-rated enclosures (minimum IPX4) for any charger mounted on an exposed garage or carport wall — a detail that gets skipped more often than it should.

None of this is exotic knowledge. It’s Appendix P, in the standard every licensed electrician is meant to be working from. But as EV demand accelerates faster than the trade can train for it, the gap between “an electrician installed my charger” and “an electrician installed my charger to Appendix P” is exactly where problems — and voided insurance claims — start showing up. What This Means If You’re Considering an EV in the Next 12 Months

If BYD, Zeekr, and the rest of the market are right about where this is heading, the smart move isn’t waiting until the car is in the driveway to think about the switchboard. Three things worth checking now:

  1. Switchboard capacity. Many older Hills/Hawkesbury homes are running boards that were never sized for an additional 32–63 A load. This is worth assessing before you’ve committed to a charger install date — and it’s becoming a bigger factor than most homeowners expect.
